Bully is an action-adventure game that is played in third person and takes place in an open universe. In the single-player mode of the game, the player assumes the role of James "Jimmy" Hopkins, a teenage rebel and high school student. Bullies, Nerds, Preppies, Greasers, Jocks, and Townies are some of the archetypes Jimmy encounters as he moves through the six chapters of the novel. To advance through the game, players must accomplish missions, which are linear scenarios with predetermined goals. The player can earn money, new goods, and gain or lose the respect of other groups by completing missions. A group that respects Jimmy will be cordial with him (and may even hire him as "muscle" or "bodyguards"); a group that despises Jimmy will assault him without warning.
